At Affenberg Salem in Southern Germany approximately 200 Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) roam freely within a 20ha area with natural vegetation. The macaques live in three large multimale multifemale social groups with unconstrained migration between groups. The population has been intensely studied with respect to social relationships, reproductive success and life history so long-term records for all individual monkeys are available.
